Sisir Sahana

Sisir Sahana was born in 1965 in Bankura, West Bengal. He completed his BFA & MFA in painting with first class from Kala Bhavan, Viswa Bharati University, Santiniketan in 1987 & 1989 respectively, followed by another MA with specialization in Stained glass painting from Central St. Martin’s College of Art & Design, London in 1994.

Sisir Sahana, known for his glass sculptures has mastered this unique avenue of expression whilst on fellowship and study trips to Europe and America. His pictorial depictions consist mainly of images and scenes from nature or perceptive, caring and responsive human faces – a theme that has been preserved in his paintings and etchings as well. Sahana works with many mediums but as expected finds glass the easiest and most enjoyable means to express his art.

He has exhibited widely in shows and galleries across India and other countries. Most recently, the artist was represented by Kalakriti at the gallery booth at India Art Fair 2012, New Delhi. Sahana’s recent solo work ‘I’ve seen the Tiger’ has been exhibited at Kalakriti Art Gallery, Hyderabad; and Sumukha Art Gallery, Bangalore, both in 2011. He is the recipient of the Merit Scholarship from Kala Bhavan, Viswa Bharati University, Santiniketan; Commonwealth Scholarship sponsored by Commonwealth Universities Commission, UK; Senior Research Fellowship by the Ministry of Human Resources & Development, Government of India; and the Bombay Art Society Award, including many other prestigious honours. He was an invitee on a fellowship at Wheaton Village, USA by the Creative Glass Center of America in 2000 & 2004.
